Words cannot describe how much our bridge community in the Florida Panhandle and along the Gulf Coast will miss her and have to adjust to her absence at our local clubs and bridge tournaments. Not bad for a girl from Booneville, MS! Although Dora Ellen had been suffering health problems during the last year, we were all surprised by the suddenness of her departure. Lee and Dora Ellen and their team were not deterred, played well against opponents that included Alan Sontag and Paul Soloway during the second half, and clinched the win. Not too surprising since Jeff Meckstroth happened to be one of the opponents during the first half. At half-time they learned their team was down 46 IMPs. Another memorable bridge experience followed a few years after Birmingham where Lee and Dora Ellen were playing on a six-man team at a Tunica Regional. A highlight of their shared bridge experiences occurred at a Birmingham Regional where they won four events. Their partnership remained strong and competitive and together they won over 5000 points. She met Lee Anderson at the FWB Bridge Club and developed an enduring bridge partnership that evolved into a life partnership when they married in August of 1990. ![]() ![]() In 1983 Dora Ellen moved to Fort Walton Beach (FWB) and worked as a comptroller for ERA American Realty. While in her late 20’s, she outlined Goren’s big book and passed it around to her friends in Holly Springs, MS and began playing an occasional game of duplicate in nearby Memphis, TN. They lived in Holly Springs, MS where they raised two boys, Shepard and Benton. She graduated from the University of Mississippi with degrees in English and Math and in 1951 married David Shepard Smith, Sr. Dora Ellen lived to be 83 and started her young life in Booneville, MS where, as an only child, began playing bridge at age 9 when her parents taught her the game. This great lady of bridge died on Christmas Eve, one day before her favorite day. The Fort Walton Beach Duplicate Bridge Club and Unit 219 ended 2013 with a sad farewell to Dora Ellen Anderson.
